Interpreter: What it Means and Where to Find One

What is an interpreter?

An interpreter can be defined as an individual fluent in two or more languages with the cultural and linguistic knowledge and skills necessary to communicate between languages. Though one can be both a translator and an interpreter, interpreting is technically distinct from translating as translating refers to written texts being changed from one language to another, whereas interpreting refers to spoken language being changed from one language to another. Depending on the language, there may or may not be interpreter certification offered by a professional organizational body overseeing the field for interpreters and translators. For those interested in being a certified interpreter, two of the most prominent certifications or credentials offered for interpreters are from the Federal Courts for Spanish and from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf for sign language interpreters. Interpreter jobs are typically found in the educational, legal, business, government, and medical fields.

What is a sign language interpreter?

Sign language interpreting is one of the largest and most organized professional fields in America because of threquirements placed on institutions from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Sign language interpreters act as cultural and linguistic mediators between deaf people using American Sign Language and hearing people speaking English. They are typically certified at the national, state, or educational level with each state having different requirements for interpreters working in particular settings. Sign language interpreters come from a wide variety of backgrounds including those who are children of deaf adults (CODA) and/or have attended an interpreter training program (ITP) to learn sign language and learn interpreting skills.
